Emergencies – initial action after collision, grounding, man overboard, port emergencies; understand distress signals and know the IMO Merchant Ship Search and Rescue Manual.
Controlling Ship Operations – keep the ship and people onboard in safe environment; use of survival craft and rescue boats, satellite EPIRBs, SARTs, immersion suits and thermal protective aids.
Sea Watch – ship navigation, traffic avoidance, emergencies response; enforce all applicable regulations.
Navigation – fix a ship's position on navigational chart; accounting for effects of winds, tides, currents and estimated speed, directs the helmsman; interpret and apply meteorological information from all sources.
Traffic Management – Observing The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea; bridge teamwork; using Radar and ARPA; knowledge of radar limitations and ARPA limitations.
In-port watch – monitor cargo operations, fire watches, security watches, monitoring communications and monitoring anchor or mooring lines.
Cargo handling – supervising the loading, stowage, securing and discharging of cargoes; monitoring safe working practices; care of cargo during voyage, including dangerous cargoes.
Safety officer – responsible to maintain lifesaving equipment, firefighting equipment, rescue boats and particularly the lifeboats; active participant in fire and boat drills.
Documentation – port, Suez and Panama canal documents. Safety equipment certificates.
