John Gallant’s Summary

Recent Masters graduate looking for entry into exciting work environments. Preferred focus is developing procedures to make workplaces more efficient and/or interacting with the public. Behind-the-scenes tasks such as computer coding are definitely welcome. Research and development opportunities are especially interesting so as to apply well developed problem solving skills.

In addition to the technological focus in the above, I also have a teaching degree and would love to be a permanent fixture in the high school system teaching math, science and physics. Areas of food science, global issues, and conservation would also be a fantastic teaching opportunity.

John Gallant’s Experience

  • Substitute teacher

    Eastern and Western School Boards

    (Higher Education industry)

    January 2007Present (3 years 3 months)

As a substitute teacher, I fill in for mostly science and math teachers and rock the socks off of the students in each and every class.

  • Sessional Lecturer

    University of Prince Edward Island

(Educational Institution; 501-1000 employees; Higher Education industry)

    September 2006Present (3 years 7 months)

As a sessional lecturer, I am responsible for teaching Physics 251: Introductory Astronomy 1. My duties include the preparation of: lectures using Microsoft Powerpoint, weekly assignments, as well as exams. I am responsible for grading the assignments/exams and recording marks with Microsoft Excel. An additional position is to teach the Physics 111: Introductory Physics tutorials. Here my duties include showing students the techniques and methods they need to use to solve assigned questions. In addition to providing a broad overview of these techniques, I also work with students on a more individual basis when they are given time to work on the questions themselves. This enables me to focus on the individual needs of particular students while others are able to do the work on their own.

  • Research Assistant

    University of British Columbia

    (Research industry)

    September 2004August 2006 (2 years )

As a research assistant while obtaining my Masters degree, I was responsible for the following duties: scientific coding using the C programming language, debugging said code, problem solving, analyzing the results of dynamical simulations which were performed on a Beowulf cluster, writing summaries and articles for scientific publication, and performing presentations based on my research results.

  • Laboratory Instructor

    University of British Columbia

    (Higher Education industry)

    September 2004April 2006 (1 year 8 months)

Laboratory supervisor for introductory Astronomy as a Teacher’s Assistant (TA). Duties included the instruction of the procedure used in various laboratory experiments, answering students questions, preparing lab setup, and grading lab reports. The experiments themselves involved both the use of computer programs which simulated telescopic observations and physical experiments regarding the complicated process of impact cratering.

  • Research Assistant

    University of P.E.I.

    (Research industry)

    April 2002August 2004 (2 years 5 months)

As a research assistant while obtaining my undergraduate degree, I was responsible for the following duties: scientific coding using the C programming language, debugging, problem solving, analyzing the results of Molecular Dynamics simulations which were performed on a Beowulf cluster, and performing presentations based on my research results.

  • Tutor

    independant

    (Higher Education industry)

    September 2002April 2004 (1 year 8 months)

I offered tutorial services to students that had difficulty with both first and second year undergraduate calculus as well as introductory physics. The one-on-one approach enabled me to focus on the specific needs of certain students which made for a very rewarding experience for both myself and the persons being tutored.

  • Cashier/Food preparation

    D.P. Murphy Inc. (Wendy's)

    (Food & Beverages industry)

    June 1999December 2002 (3 years 7 months)

Working with D.P. Murphy Inc. allowed me to interact with the public through both a cashier role and as an order taker. Working the dining room area gave me a chance to welcome guests and to ensure everything was up to their standards.
