Web Developer, Principal Engineer and Photojournalist
Vancouver, Canada Area
I have a very broad background in electrical and computer engineering, and have excelled along those lines at every professional job I have been hired for. I have had manufacturing roles in leading fiber optics companies, as well as experience developing a large portion of a voice over IP engine. I have a master's of electrical and computer engineering, with a specialty in advanced video codecs and compression. In addition to my day job, I always continually upgrade my own skills -- this has helped me to become a respected blogger in the Vancouver area, and a well-known Wordpress plugin developer. I was also recently nominated for a Canadian country music award for web design and development work done on Jessie Farrell's website.
In addition, I also cover a lot of Canadian events as a photographer and journalist. Last year I covered Vancouver Fashion Week, Facebook Developer Garage, Launch Party Vancouver, New Music West, BC Festival 150, and the 2008 Canadian Juno Awards in Calgary. More information can be found via the media kit link up above.

May 2007 — Present (2 years 8 months)
In my spare time, I am an avid photographer and lover of both digital and film photography technologies. I routinely attend photography conferences, and have spoken several times regarding my usage of high dynamic range imagery and techniques for producing HDR images.
Recently I have received several requests from high profile companies to do photoshoots for them. I recently did a soccer shoot of a medal winning Canadian female soccer player for Puma which will be used in several online sources and several large-scale publications. I also photographed the 2008 Juno Awards in Calgary, Canada as a representative of the media.
I have photographed many concerts and musicians, including Leslie Feist, Matthew Good, Sarah McLachlan, Blue Rodeo, Sophie Milman, and Michael Buble.
I have had my photos published in Air Transat's in-flight magazine, Atmosphere, the Vancouver Sun and Province newspapers, CurrentTV, the LAist, The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos, the NASA astronomy website, and on local news and television broadcasts.

Shortly afterwards BraveNewCode's WPtouch plugin was added to WordPress.com, and is now the default mobile theme for approximately 60 million page views a month of mobile traffic.
BraveNewCode was also an organizer for the 2008 WordCamp Vancouver, and one the prime organizers for WordCamp Whistler 2009, a gathering of WordPress enthusiasts help on January 24, 2009 up in beautiful Whistler, BC, Canada.
Prior to joining BraveNewCode, I developed several software applications on the side, including a Facebook Application for Matthew Good's last album, Hospital Music, which opened at #1 in Canada and hit #6 on the United States alternative charts.

At CounterPath, I have been the prime media lead since I joined in 2004. I originally developed the entire video stack for CounterPath's award winning SDK, and eventually rewrote most of the audio engine as well. Some of CounterPath's customers that I have helped acquire while in my position are Cisco Systems, BT, AT&T, and Deutsche Telekom, I have done patent applications for various features, and have assumed an active role in the R & D department, prototyping various cutting edge features.
In addition to my hands on roles, I also supervised other employees in the media team, giving them guidance and suggestions for skill improvements.

Worked within the new product introduction (NPI) group for dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) optical components. Worked on a tunable fiber bragg-grating based dispersion compensater, a MEMS-based 16x16 optical cross connect, and several new innovative couplers, including a 50 GHz thin film filter and a laser-welded coupler.

Helped run the COTH product line which specialized in wideband optical couplers. At one point I was personally responsible for $1,000,000 worth of revenue each week due to the success of my line.
M.A.Sc. , Electrical Engineering (Multimedia) , August 2002 — August 2005
My research focused on the H.264 video codec. I created a scalability scheme that would combine MPEG2 and H.264 for concurrently broadcast HD feeds. I also proposed improvements to the H.264 intra-prediction scheme.
