"Cafe Jazz" Ted Hasiuk’s Summary
Café Jazz first crackled onto the air on a Monday night in the fall of 1998, in French on CKXL in Winnipeg and continued in that slot for two years. In September of 1998, we also began broadcasting on Winnipeg's CJUM on Sunday mornings at 8AM and maintained that familiar hour for four years. There was one full year, when Canada's Smooth Jazz Connection was heard in both official languages - as such, it's perhaps the only show in Canada, most certainly the only Smooth Jazz show in Canada, to have had that distinction!
Broadcasters look to Ted for his expertise. He was consulted by the management team of CIWV The Wave, Canada's first smooth jazz station, prior to their launch in September 2000 & in addition, he’s appeared at three separate CRTC hearings in support of applications for Smooth Jazz licenses in Canada.
In May 2001, Café Jazz was picked up by CJRT, JAZZ.FM 91 in Toronto – and enjoyed one year of being heard in Canada's largest market, all of southern Ontario as well as portions of upstate New York. In February of 2002, we moved over to CKDX (Foxy 88.5 FM) once again in Toronto while beginning in 2005, Café Jazz began being heard on the airwaves outside of Canada with KHBL located in Mark Twain's home town of Hannibal Missouri becoming our first US affiliate. Currently we are heard in Canada, the USA, the UK, Chile, & all points in between via the internet!!
For his efforts, early in 2007, The Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards nominated Ted as Smooth Jazz Broadcaster of the Year for the previous year, and although he didn't win, it was a great honor considering he had no broadcasting background. The following year, Café Jazz went international - currently the program is heard on affiliates in Canada, the US, the UK, Chile, and all points in between thru the internet!! More recently, Ted picked up a 2008 CSJA nomination for Broadcaster of the Year - his second nod in three years!!
