I am currently assistant professor of integrated journalism at the School of Journalism at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.
As a pioneer in the world of online journalism, I was part of the team that launched the award-winning BBCNews.com website in 1997. I was responsible for editing the front page, before moving on to set up a dedicated technology news section online in 2001.
I worked as a journalist for the BBC for 15 years. Early on in my career, I spent four years as a foreign correspondent in the Middle East for BBC TV and Radio, covering military coups, presidential assassinations and the Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.
I believe the internet presents new challenges and opportunities for journalism. The wealth of choice of news online means journalists have to strive harder to attract and keep readers. But at the same time, the internet offers a range of tools which can be used to present news in different ways, using text, images, audio/video, interactive tools and e-mail feedback. It is still a very young medium and I believe that we have only just scratched the surface of what is possible.
