Alex Kinsella's Experience
Senior Public Relations and Social Media Manager
Research In Motion
Public Company; 10,001+ employees; RIMM; Telecommunications industry
November 2011 – Present (7 months) Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
I read that the average person my age goes through five career changes. This would be my fifth "career" - although all have been in technology. I've just started as a Senior Public Relations and Social Media Manager at Research In Motion. I'll be supporting the Developer Relations team as we continue to work with our developers to build the best development platform in the market - BBX!
Team Lead, BlackBerry App World Product Management
Research In Motion
Public Company; 10,001+ employees; RIMM; Telecommunications industry
August 2011 – November 2011 (4 months) Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
I currently work as the Team Lead for BlackBerry App World Product Management with a team of three Senior Product Managers. The team manages the entire suite of BlackBerry App World systems - including Payment Service, internal and external portals, and the App World clients.
Senior Product Manager
Research In Motion
Public Company; 10,001+ employees; RIMM; Telecommunications industry
August 2010 – August 2011 (1 year 1 month)
In August, 2010 I was promoted to Senior Product Manager for BlackBerry App World. In this role I manage the development of the long term road map for BlackBerry App World and coordinate requirements gathering process for multiple internal stakeholders and of course, our amazing BlackBerry developer community. I have also been able to put my social media skills to use as a blogger for Inside BlackBerry (http://blogs.blackberry.com) and as an official Tweeter for @BlackBerry and @BlackBerryDev. We're now getting ready to launch BlackBerry App World on the new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet later this quarter.
Technical Product Manager
Research In Motion
Public Company; 10,001+ employees; RIMM; Telecommunications industry
September 2008 – August 2010 (2 years)
After over eight years in direct store delivery software, I felt it was time for a change and applied for the a Technical Product Manager position at Research In Motion - makers of the BlackBerry smartphone. The timing was right as shortly after I started, RIM announced the plans to launch their own app store - BlackBerry App World - in April of 2009. As a technical product manager on the Platform team, I was assigned to lead the efforts to integrate PayPal billing into BlackBerry App World as the launch payment method. Leveraging my background with back-end billing systems, we were able to deliver the solution for the launch in April and have expanded the system to include credit card and carrier billing purchases also.
Technical Product Manager
HighJump Software
Privately Held; 201-500 employees; Computer Software industry
November 2007 – August 2008 (10 months)
GBG was purchased by HighJump Software (who in turn was owned by 3M) in September of 2007. After the acquisition, an opportunity emerged for the move to product management and I jumped at the chance. As technical product manager, I managed the day software development life cycle of our product line and assisted the product management team with road map planning.
Team Lead - Mobile Middle-ware
HighJump Software
Privately Held; 201-500 employees; Computer Software industry
January 2006 – November 2007 (1 year 11 months)
I think on my feet and this lead to my teaching myself how to code so I could fix problems on the road. My management team took notice of my interest in development and moved me into the role of Team Lead, Mobile Middle-ware. With this role, I lead a three person team developing our back-end server solution.
Application Consultant
GBG
Privately Held; 51-200 employees; Insurance industry
January 2004 – January 2006 (2 years 1 month)
Going against the traditional acquisition grain, Waterloo, ON based Global Beverage Group (GBG) purchased Entrada Technologies - and seven other US based firms - in 2003. I was offered the chance to move to Waterloo to train the Canadian office on Entrada's software platform and continue my role as an Application Consultant. Within this positioned, I trained application consultants in all nine GBG offices across Canada and the US. The work took me to 37 states, including a week and half long contract at a Coca Cola bottler on Maui, HI. How many other jobs could get you have a business trip to Hawai'i?
Systems Integration Manager
Entrada Technologies
March 2001 – December 2003 (2 years 10 months)
As my time at Entrada continued, I began to travel to customer sites to install our company's software. In time, we hired other customer support team members and I moved into the Systems Integration Manager role. Within this position, I installed systems for distributors of Budweiser, Miller, Coors, Coca-Cola, and Pepsi across the United States.
Customer Support Specialist
Entrada Technologies
January 2000 – March 2001 (1 year 3 months)
The beginning of my career in technology. This was an entry level position in a five person start up based in a beer distribution warehouse. The founder/CEO was a MIT educated genius who inherited two Budweiser distributors. As he took on the family business, he saw the need for mobilizing his sales and distribution teams - thus giving birth to Entrada Technologies. I was the first non-development hire - and the only customer support team member for the first year and half. Best hands on learning experience you could ever wish for.
Production Assistant
Comcast Cable
Public Company; 10,001+ employees; CMCSA; Telecommunications industry
June 1994 – September 1995 (1 year 4 months)
My first real job after high school. Worked as a production assistant (shooting, editing, getting coffee) for the Ad Sales department at Comcast Cable's southeastern headquarters in West Palm Beach, FL. Looking back, this was definitely the best way to start off my working years. Everyone on the team was extremely professional yet still knew how to make work fun. The hours could be tough, but I knew the work I was doing was appreciated and respected.
